Buurtzorg is a pioneering healthcare organization established in the Netherlands in 2006 with a nurse-led mode of holistic care. In 2015, its founder, Jos de Blok, was selected as an Ashoka fellow, a global social enterprise network. Buurtzorg has the highest client satisfaction rate among all healthcare organizations in the Netherlands and received the “Best Employer” title by Effectory Beste Werkgevers Awards for four years in the last five years.

Buurtzorg’s onion model of care, “The Buurtzorg Model,” is based on promoting self-management, continuity, trust-based relationships, and formal sectoral networks. Self-managing teams have freedom in the organization of their work, sharing responsibility, and decision-making. This model allows teams to have a say in their organization and its decisions.

There is no hierarchical governance structure in Buurtzorg. Rather, there is a network of small teams supported by an IT system and a back-office function. This model creates happy workspaces and provides better care with lower costs.
